These are fantastic binoculars for a great price. I like that they are not too heavy or take up too much space yet have excellent optics and provide a great view. Super handy for route finding across complicated terrain.

If you want to prevent foot injuries, increase foot energy and mileage, and improve support and stability, get some aftermarket insoles. No footwear comes with insoles. I guarantee you will love how these or the SOLE Performance Medium insoles feel. Once you try them, you will never go without them. This is how great of a product insoles are for your feet.

These are the best wool boxers out there, maybe even the best boxers. With a 4.5-inch inseam, anatomical pouch, and 5% lycra stretch, the Icebreaker Anatomica Boxer Briefs are comfortable for all activity levels, from the comfort of the couch to the top of the highest peaks.
Even though wool dries quickly and resists odors, daily, or close to, washing is still recommended. They are machine washable but don’t put them in the drier.
The drawback of high quality is a high price tag but there are plenty of discounts available for holidays and discontinued colors. With 12% nylon for durability, you’ll get your money’s worth.

Fleece jackets are an essential piece of hiking gear because they offer breathable warmth at an accessible price. This is also something that is likely to be worn in regular life so some style is a nice bonus on top of performance.
It’s great to see REI products having some more fun with colorways. The latest version takes inspiration from the 1992 look and uses the same zipper pulls, labels, and relaxed fit. Combined with using 80% recycled polyester/20% polyester Polartec microfleece, REI’s original fleece is better than ever.

Understand that no hiking or trail running shoe has a genuine insole. They have floppy inserts that do nothing for your feet.
SOLE aftermarket insoles cured my foot of plantar fasciitis and prevented it from recurring. These are essential companions to any footwear. I have these and the Performance Thin insoles in all of my shoes.
Once you try them, you will wish they had been in your footwear earlier.

The Vidda Pro Ventilated Trousers are designed with all the needs of an outdoor adventurer in mind. Of course, the fabric is tough and also waxed to resist moisture.
Durable fabric can be stiff, so these trousers have shaped knees and crotch gusset to enhance movement. The ventilation comes from an external zipper. The knees are reinforced and have space to add knee pads.
Now, here’s where these pants really separate themselves from the rest: the cuff size can be adjusted and has bootloops, there is space for gear including a knife pocket and axe loop, and the front leg pockets keep items handy.
Fjallraven really thought of everything and managed to make these pants look good too,
These trousers are also available for women, but not as readily available. Get the women’s ventilated trousers from Fjallraven, Amazon, or Moosejaw.

This is a versatile, breathable, comfortable, and better alternative to a small hiking backpack. Other than the hip belt buckle, the pack is excellent. I love all the zippered pockets (hip belt) that allow easy access to essentials and snacks. I can take everything I need and not feel weighed down.

The Nano Puff’s horizontal brick quilting looks great and evenly distributes the 60g recycled polyester insulation.
The estimated temperatures for this mid layer is 40-60F at rest but activity and layers will expand the comfortable temperature range. It is also windproof with a water-resistant finish on both the outer shell and lining. A drawcord at the hem also keeps in or vent warmth.
If you’re trying to decide between the Nano Puff and the equally popular Down Sweater, here are the main differences. Synthetic filling is never as warm as down, it is more durable and functional when wet. Down is warmer at rest but will also feel warmer during activity so the Nano Puff is a better choice for hiking. The best choice depends on how you intend to use the jacket.
Like Patagonia products, it is sewn in a Fair Trade facility with safe conditions and fair wages and backed by a lifetime guarantee.

Leatherman makes a wide range of multitools for every situation. The Charge+ TTi is recommended for hiking and backpacking because the lightweight titanium handles cut down on weight without compromising strength.
There are 19 tools in this bad boy, including two steel blades, six screwdrivers, two pliers, scissors, and eight more. That’s the list of specific uses but some creativity or necessity can add more.
Is this multitool absolutely necessary for every hike? No. But, the more time you spend outdoors, the more likely something will go wrong.
This also makes a great gift from concerned parents and partners who want to ensure the safe return of their loved ones.

Footwear is the most important part of staying comfortable in hiking and life. Great shoes and socks aren’t always enough, especially because the insole that comes with most shoes is cheap and flimsy.
We keep preaching about the importance of insoles because this small update makes a huge difference – whether you have foot issues or just general discomfort and fatigue.
The high arches and firm support from this insole help with plantar fasciitis, low arches, high arches, pronation, supination, and more. The high-density foam, deep heel cup, and additional support can help anyone.
I’ve also wondered why my socks wear down under the ball of my feet and learned that adding arch support will decrease the pressure on the front of my foot that causes this. Testing is still in progress but extending the life of multiple $20 pairs of socks with $50 insoles makes sens.
The shape and material can also improve gait, correct imbalances, and redistribute pressure to increase athletic performance or help prevent feet from tiring out before the rest of your body. Trust me, you’ll start with one pair, begin moving it between all your shoes, and then get a pair for all your favorite kicks.

Days on the trail or very sensitive skin mean needing to clean skin without water or a bathroom.
Wilderness Wipes make it easy to wipe off all the dirt and build-up. The pH-balanced formula contains vitamin E and aloe vera so you don’t need to wash it off.
There are two sizes available to wash part or all of the body. Some people like to use these as a portable bidet. Whatever you do with them, pack them out.

The Sahara t-shirt is very thin so it breathes in the heat, dries fast, and feels barely there. It’s great for day-to-day wear and also easy to wash and dry while backpacking or traveling.

These socks are what you want on your feet in hot weather, snug shoes, and blister prevention since they will not bunch up. Plus, the merino wool blend will pull moisture away from your feet further decreasing the odds of blisters flaring up.

Hiking with children isn’t for the faint of heart, so comfort – for everyone – is paramount. As the name suggests, the Deuter Kid Comfort keeps kids and the people carrying them as comfortable as possible.
The kid gets a sweet ride in a mesh cabin covered by a sun shade with a soft (and washable) front pillow for naps and chewing. The adult gets mesh ventilation that cuts down on sweating, excellent weight distribution, and tons of carrying space.
This is the carrier I used, and I recommend it. I found the frame easy to stand up, and also liked the side entry system that requires getting just one squirming leg into place. The kid seat can be adjusted for the babe’s comfort and yours. I’m also convinced that the adjustable footrests made naps happen faster than leaving feet dangling.
Taking turns with the carrier is easy with the sliding system that adjusts back length. It’s easy enough to switch back and forth on the trail.
The only thing I would have done differently is start hiking with my child earlier. The Kid Comfort can be used as soon as a child can sit upright independently. Many brands have additional age and weight requirements. My child wasn’t up for being carried all the way until the 48-pound weight limit, but yours might.
The initial price of this pack is steep but also comparable to many competitors. I can attest that the resale value is high, and you should be able to recoup a good portion of what you paid.

Rain jackets can have 2, 2.5, or 3 layers. More layers provide the most rain protection with the most breathability and durability. The cons are a higher price tag and stiffer fabric.
The Torentshell has a much lower price tag than other name-brand 3-layer jackets, and it has the details that Patagonia is known for. The neck and pockets are lined for warmth, the hood tucks down into neck, and the whole jacket can be stowed in a pocket. The shell, Durable Water Repellent coating, and polyurethane layer are as environmentally responsible as they can be.
The cons of this rain jacket are the same as most 3-layer rain jackets – the fabric can make some noise, and the fit doesn’t work for everybody. The cut and color selection is stylish for a rain jacket, and the wide range of sizes makes it easy to size up. This popular jacket is available in sizes for men – women – kids – baby and a mid-thigh length women’s parka.

This is a must-have product for hiking or backpacking in areas without mobile phone connectivity. The inReach Mini is easy to use, durable, and connects to your phone (use its screen) via the Garmin Explore app.
You can choose from a variety of monthly subscriptions. I pay for one all-year round; the benefit is that it reduces the cost of a potential rescue. It is essentially a small (insurance) fee against the high cost of airlift rescue.

Stripes aren’t the only way to jazz up a down jacket. Kuhl keeps it simple with the Spyfire with panels over the chest that smooth out the baffles.
The combination of larger baffles at the chest and back maximize warmth while smaller baffles at the sides and arms cut down bulk and retain mobility.
The yoke has a stronger fabric for durability while the underarms are a stretchy knit to vent heat. I’d also get this jacket just for the five zipper pockets – two chest pockets, two hand pockets, plus one on the upper sleeve.
This jacket looks good, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t perform.
All in all, the Spyfire combines fashion and function. It’s available for men as a jacket, hoodie, or vest. For women, a longer parka is also an option.

As someone who wears athletic clothes most of the time, I prefer clothing that looks normal with performance features. The Cool Trail shirt does just that with a regular t-shirt cut and soft fabric.
The material feels like cotton and is somewhat more “green” than similar shirts. The polyester is recycled and it also contains 30% Naia Renew, a blend of renewable wood pulp and post-consumer plastics.
I like the looser fit because these athletic fabrics can be clingy. It also has a loop in the collar to hang it up, something I always appreciate.

A hydration bladder is essential gear for hikers of all ages. An adult-sized hydration backpack is too big for children but the kid-sized CamelBak Mini M.U.L.E. can fit adults too. If you’re not sure about buying this for your kid, don’t hesitate because you might want to use it too.

The challenge that all technical jackets have is keeping you warm without overheating and weighing as little as possible. Outdoor Research’s Deviator has made substantial strides in meeting this goal. Backcountry Magazine agrees, awarding this jacket the Editor’s Choice Gear Guide Winner for 2024.
There is no waterproofing – that’s why it’s so breathable – but it does have a hood. The fabric contains 5-10% spandex for a close fit and is more durable than you’d expect from the light weight: only about 12 ounces/340 grams for both men and women.
The Deviator jacket, pants, and gloves are on my wish list because I find staying dry in the cold is more of a challenge than staying warm.

No one likes to be bitten on the face by bugs. Fortunately, there’s something you can do about it. For only $13 and 1.3 ounces, the Sea to Summit Head Net keeps bugs out.
Wearing this net over a full-brimmed hat makes it the most effective because it creates a 360-degree buffer but it also works with a baseball cap.
Yes, wearing a net over your head can feel weird and dorky but it feels much better than being eaten by insects.
Like an emergency blanket, this is the type of geat that is better to have and not need than vice versa.

The Flexlite is a scoop-shaped camp chair similar to the highest-rated Helinox Chair Zero but at a fraction of the price. That fraction is usually 1/2 but can be as low as 1/3 during a sale.
At the size of two Nalgenes and under 1.5 pounds, it’s worth it to strap to your pack for a comfortable seat at your destination. The small size isn’t just convenient for hiking. It is small enough to keep in the car for impromptu park visits or watching those kids’ soccer games in comfort.
Most, but not all, people enjoy the size and shape of this chair but as always with REI products, you can test it out yourself and return it if it doesn’t work out.

SOL stands for Survive Outdoors Longer and is designed for if you end up SOL.
Weighing less than 3 ounces, you won’t even notice this potentially life-saving blanket in your pack. It folds out to 84″ x 56″ (7′ x 4′ 8″). The vacuum-metalized polyethylene reflects 90% of heat. It also keeps out wind and water without noise. The durable material will continue to perform if damaged.

Like all hiking gear, underwear needs to perform. Any layer that doesn’t dry quickly is uncomfortable, so moisture-wicking is essential. Wool has always been the best moisture-wicking material, and that’s why these 83% Merino wool underwear by Icebreaker are so popular.
I purchased these knowing I wouldn’t return them, despite REI’s generous return policy. At first, I was disappointed that these $35 panties looked just like the elastic-trimmed underwear that comes in a 6-pack.
After more washing and wearing, I have joined the ranks of 90% of reviewers who recommend Siren briefs. The initial price is high, but the cost-per-wear is competitive and the three style choices make it easy to find a pair you like.

If you’re looking for quality hiking poles that last a long time, these are a good value. You get high-quality lock levers, carbide tips that won’t wear down, and don’t have to buy snow baskets separately. The 7075 aluminum shafts give the poles a final weight of 1 pound 2.5 ounces (and an ounce more for the 105-140 cm size) but will also never bend or break like carbon can.
These are hiking poles. The weight and larger folded size won’t appeal to most runners or long-distance hikers. If you’re looking for a simple hiking pole that won’t let you down, try these Traverse Trekking Poles.
I didn’t want or think I needed hiking poles until having some knee trouble. I was itching to get back out on the trails but also didn’t want to risk any more knee damage. The compromise was taking hiking poles.
A thorough introduction to the ins and outs of hiking poles from someone at REI led me to these. I first used them on a steep and rocky 13er and couldn’t believe the difference they made. The made. I wasn’t even tired afterward. I estimate it reduced my effort by 25%. Using the poles transferred so much energy from the lower body to the upper body and core. That also corrected my posture from balancing myself by leaning forward to standing straight up. This also eliminated the lower back pain and foot discomfort that I felt after long hikes.
I chose these poles because the locking mechanism was secure, and I wanted a pole that would never break. I’ve had ski poles snap before and don’t want to deal with that in the backcountry. The weight and folding size were not issues because this was a day hike, and the collapsed length was fine dangling from my pack when not in use. I also thought the cork handles and straps were comfortable, even over hours of use.
I recommend hiking poles to anyone with injuries, balance issues, and hiking in challenging terrain with steep climbs and descents, large rocks, and snow or ice.

At only 2″ x 5″ and 3 ounces, the Squeeze is small enough for thru-hikes or to keep in your pack in case of emergency.
Hiking Daily writer Maytal Agasi used this model on the Pacific Crest Trail. She recommends using a CNOC Vecto water bladder and smartwater bottle.
Try the Grayl Geopress to also remove viruses and heavy metals in addition to bacteria and protozoa.
