Summary
The challenge that all technical jackets have is keeping you warm without overheating and weighing as little as possible. Outdoor Research’s Deviator has made substantial strides in meeting this goal. Backcountry Magazine agrees, awarding this jacket the Editor’s Choice Gear Guide Winner for 2024.
There is no waterproofing – that’s why it’s so breathable – but it does have a hood. The fabric contains 5-10% spandex for a close fit and is more durable than you’d expect from the light weight: only about 12 ounces/340 grams for both men and women.
The Deviator jacket, pants, and gloves are on my wish list because I find staying dry in the cold is more of a challenge than staying warm.
Who Should Buy?
If you’re looking for a just-warm-enough jacket that breathes for high activity levels or cool weather that makes it easy to overheat.
